Davul

large bass drum from the orient

Davul

The davul is a large flat drum. Originally from the Orient, it is also popular at medieval markets. Traditionally played at the zurna, it then sounds with loud bagpipes.

The great oriental drum.
Its roots can be traced back to Biblical Babylon. Today it is played as far as India, where it is primarily known as the Turkish Davul.

Tied in front of the stomach, it is beaten on one side, the lighter side, with a willow rod, on the other, the bass side, with a thick wooden mallet.

We build the Davul out of a slightly curved wooden body, which is braced with a metal ring underneath and a wooden ring on top using our proven technology. We cover these drums with both goat skins and beef veal parchment.
For the high side, which will traditionally play with the rod, we usually pull up a goat parchment, the bass side is covered with a thicker or a natural one with cattle parchment.
Depending on the size and stringing, higher pitches can be achieved, as well as pronounced bass drums.
The drum is then tuned to the desired pitches with the wooden knobs arranged all around.

Davul

We make Davul in different sizes:

  • 32x18 cm
  • 40 x 25 cm
  • 44 x 25 cm
  • 48 x 30 cm
  • 52 x 30 cm
  • 56 x 30 cm

The most popular sizes are 48 and 52 cm im diameter.
But other sizes are also available.
The colour is a light wood colour like Teak or dark like walnut.

For the skins are goat skins, calf skin or goat with hair abailable.

decoupled Davul

In the traditional models, both heads are braced together. That means you cannot span one side independently of the other.
To get around this problem, we have developed a new tensioning construction where each side can be tensioned separately.

The cord is not pulled to the other side of the skin, but is fixed to points in the body. This now makes it possible to tune each side to a specific tone and also both tones of the Davul to each other. The keynote of one side still depends on the diameter and the choice of head. We only offer this system for the larger Davul from 48 cm.

Xiao

The Japanese shakuhachi is best known as a notch flute from Asia.

This Chinese variant is built more slender and has a narrow notch like the South American Quena flute. This narrow notch is a little easier to blow than the wide edge of the Shakuhachi.

The flute has 5 finger holes and one thumb hole. You can play about 2 octaves with it, the fingering is very similar to the 6-hole flute, the thumb hole is the 6th hole. Since the holes are very far apart, the fingers are set a little differently than you are used to with the smaller 6-hole flutes.

The flute is made of bamboo, the surface is darkly colored and the head is decorated with a dragon motif. A traditional Chinese lucky knot can be attached to the foot.
